about

I wrote this one in Italy. It’s kind of an amalgamation of a couple ideas, one from a book that I was reading at the time, and the other, a tangent from a song that I heard a few times. The first part of the song is about the power of time, and how it shapes reality, and how anything that you believe to be solid and true at one moment is really tenuous and fragile. Your most fundamental essence could be stripped away and leave you laying bare, before the eyes of God. The second part is about how as your father’s son, you are the continuation of his life, his sorrows, his dreams. It’s kind of flipping the script on the song Genealogy, because now the father can look into his son, and see his whole life reflected back into his eyes, and that becomes an infinite mercy, and is the foundation of the strongest of love between father and son, as time flows from one to the other.

lyrics

Winter’s chill will fade
Just like our fragile youth
And time can turn the truth to lies
And turn the lies to truth

Before your eyes

That which you hold dear
All that makes you sure
Can some day all just disappear
And leave you laying bare

Before your eyes

Before your eyes were the eyes of your father
And as his son you are the face of his sorrow
But looking into sorrow you’ll find mercy
And from the seeds of mercy love arrives

Before your eyes
